Motivating Children to Read

  • Parents can motivate reading in their children by demonstrating
how reading is important, as well as, pleasurable to themselves.
  • Read a section of the newspaper together maybe even a topic for class current events.
  • Keep a wide variety of books around the house. Some local bookstores will trade used books toward the cost of a new or other used books.
  • Set aside time to read aloud together. Our students still love to be read to, but remember not to let the phone or TV interrupt parents either.
  • Connect reading to special events. If you plan a trip to an historical site, pick up a book about it before you go and have your student prepare to be a tour guide for the day. Tips aren't out of the question for their effort are they?
  • Planning a cross state/country vacation? Get your children to help
plan by buying a few books that will tell about the areas you might visit.
  • Build on your child's interests. Books on almost every hobby are available in the library or bookstore.
  • Explore the Internet together and see how many good articles you can find on a topic of interest. Try to find misinformation too, a great life skill.
