School Board of the City of Virginia Beach
Regulation 5-57.1 Medication Policy

     1. The principal will require any student under medical care and using prescribed medication during school hours to present to the school nurse, the principal, or some designee, a doctor's order stating the name of the medication prescribed for the student, the time to be administered, the dosage of medication, and the total duration of treatment. Statement of diagnosis is recommended. Administration of medication at school also requires the written signature of the parent/guardian.

     2. All medicines will be secured in the clinic in its original container or in an appropriately labeled pharmacy container. Because drug policy guards against medication on a student's person, it is advised that the parent/guardian transport prescription medication to the student's school. Extenuating circumstances (i.e., asthma) may require modification to this regulation and will be considered by the principal on an individual basis.

     3. Unless written as a prescription, over-the-counter medications will not be administered during school hours.

If you have any questions or require additional information,
please contact me at the Center for Effective Learning.
I am available during regular school hours.
The direct clinic phone number is (757) 473.0731.
Mrs. Susan Bell, RN
